This community doesn't seem very alive... but I thought I could post the first twp pictures I could take of my new axolotl.

I have had one before, more than 10 years ago, and have since then dreamt about getting another. So now.. I have!

Excuse the n00bness of this but I'm realitvely new to keeping axolotls.

I have an axie, and recently I noticed he has a greyish haze on his body. After freaking for a bit, I did some research. Various webpages told me that the best thing to use was mercurochrome (went to a pharmacy, who told me you can't get it in this country). I then tried giving him salt baths, which I did for three days 1-2 weeks ago. I also did a major water change. I think it improved a little, but it seems to be back again.

I've read conflicting things about whether it's safe to use methylene blue on axies. Fortunately I have some for my fish. What do you guys reckon?

Advice needed please x [Apr. 2nd, 2008|10:23 pm]

Hi everyone.

I need all your advice. I've fallen in love with an axolotl at my local pet shop. Its an albino one, not sure on the sex and its approx 5 inch long. I'm currently caring for a 350 liter cold water fish tank so I'm used to water changes and chemical treatments etc. I have a beautiful spare 60 liter tank that i was going to sell but I'm seriously thinking of keeping it and homing this little fella.

What i need from you is as much information as possible. I know about the larger stones for the tank bottom, keeping them as single pets, and not too bright light but what filter do you find is best and will the water need aeration etc? As much info as possible would be great. I've scoured the Internet but you get so many varied opinions i find its always better to just ask the people who know xxxx

Thanks in advance xxxx

I finally got a new camera!

This time, measurements are in INCHES. Also, I somehow missed one. They start to look the same after a while, there should be 15 (I had 18, 3 were given to a classmate), but I only have pics of 14. I mean, I took pics of all of them, but, somehow mistook two pics for the same axie and didn't edit it.. Annnnyway...

New owner! Who needs help :( [Nov. 13th, 2007|10:09 am]

Wow, this community is dead :(

So, yesterday I did something possibly a bit silly. On an impulse I bought a pair of axolotls despite knowing literally nothing about them (well. A few bits here and there, but certianly nothing about ow to look after them). I'm a tropical fish owner, and I figured they can't be THAT different to keeping fish, and they're awesome, so I thought what the hell.

I have two of them - one leucistic one called Belial and one albino one called Solomon (yes, i'm a goth, I know :P I was reading the Goetia yesterday morning and the names seem to work). Belial is about 4" long and Solomon is about 3-3.5" long. I put them in my old goldfish tank, which is 4 gallons. Yes, this is far too small, I know - i'm planning to pick up a 10 or 15gal tank second hand soon. But as they're fairly small right now and don't seem to do an awful lot, I figure a few days/weeks in a 4gal isn't going to do them too much harm.

I did put a combination filter/air pump in there for an hour or so, but then I read water current tends to freak axolotls out, so I took it out again. Right now all they have is a few rocks and a smallish LED light. There's no gravel as I read it can do them harm.

Currently i'm feeding them frozen red mosquito larvae - but I cannot for the life of me find any information about how often to feed them. Some things say every three days, some say daily.. what is it?

Also, is there anything I particularly need to know? I know to keep them cool, have no strong current, no particularly strong light, and otherwise treat them as I would fish and do a 20% water change weekly or so - but what other than that?

Thanks! :)
